OUR FOUNDER

Founded by Harold D. Hard in September of 1945, the company started in a garage in back of his former home at 1626 E. Hudson Street. As a former assistant fire brigade chief with Curtis Wright Aircraft Plant, he started the business with one other employee. He expanded the business to take in 2 sons in the 1950's, and the third son joined the company in the 1970's. Over the years, each of the sons has brought in children of their own. Harold would say, "The only way to get good employees, is to raise them." That has proven true, but there are numerous employees who have been with the company in excess of 20 years. The largest locally owned family fire protection business in Central Ohio; selling, servicing and installing restaurant systems and special hazard fire suppression systems. We spun off into 3 companies in 1989, and branched out into more special hazard protection systems, including explosion protection systems. We are protecting telephone companies, banks, factory processes, and more. We have developed new markets around the world and moved into high-rise fire alarm and evacuation systems. Hard Fire Suppression Systems, Inc. has an excellent worldwide reputation.

Harold was the founding father and past president of the National Association of Fire Extinguisher Equipment Distributors (NAFED). Bill was a charter member and past Installer Chairman of the Fire Suppression Systems Association (FSSA). Mike has just finished his term as Chairman of the installer's division and currently serves on 2 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) committees, which set international standards for the fire protection industry.

After his retirement and up to his death in December 2003, Harold continued to stop by the office and keep in touch. Likewise, Bill, from his retirement in 1998 until his death in January 2005 was in the office on a regular basis, both to consult or just listen. In continuing their legacy and following the examples of Harold and Bill, we continue to have a great family relationship. Mike has maintained their "open-door" policy as well as many other skills he acquired during his apprenticeship. Mike is always available to field concerns, solve installation problems, or just talk. Judy works on safety issues and is the computer drafting person for the system designs. Cathy is the family ambassador. Being in sales, she works closely with all the employees to get the job done.

As a family, we celebrate all our birthdays and our children's birthdays together. We're always attending the kids sporting events and celebrating the holidays. Mom (Angela Hard) is our resident artist. She's contributed to the numerous pieces of art throughout the office. She's also the "plant lady", adding another slice of comfort to the office. Sometimes, she just comes in to see her kids. She always brings a smile to our days, and sometimes brings in homemade goodies. We'd like to see more of that! We talk some business at home, but more important, we talk to each other and are good friends. We try to look out for each other and show our support. This carries through to every day life at work.

Our employees know we care. Our front office is open, with a large counter top half wall in the center. Everyone "hangs out" and talks about whatever's going on. The bullpen is always the center of communication. We try to show our concern, through safety meetings and stress relieving parties and cookouts. Our employees' families are always coming into the office and we share in how our "future employees" are growing.

The average employee of Hard Fire Suppression Systems, Inc. has been with us over 10 years, with several extending as far as 25-30 years. As we've grown (adding 6 new people, 3 new positions), the one thing that comes across is that our employees are family. We offer the best health and dental insurance plans available for our size of company. We offer a substantial life insurance policy, uniforms and a very successful profit-sharing program.

Our technicians and sales people are linked with Nextel radios in the field, and to the office. This has brought a tremendous advantage to solving problems and having questions answered immediately. It makes us more efficient and we're able to handle more work by being in constant touch with each other.
